Accounting and Finance Pathway from The College

Pathway Overview

This programme provides students who have an interest in accounting or finance with a solid academic background which will prepare them for the workplace or postgraduate training. Students will acquire key technical accounting and finance skills and will also develop their knowledge of a broad range of topics which will enable them not only to understand financial information but also how to link it to broader decision making.

The Accounting and Finance programme at Swansea University can provide up to 9 exemptions from the ACCA professional accreditation, the maximum exemptions available from a UK academic degree.

Successful completion of this pathway will lead to the award of one of the following from Swansea University:

  • Accounting, BSc (Hons)
  • Accounting and Finance, BSc (Hons)
  • Finance, BSc (Hons)

You can apply via Study Link.

Before you submit your application, please make sure that: 

  • You know which course you want to study and which date you want to start.
  • You have electronic copies of your academic transcripts, which you will need to attach to your online application. Please note: the limit for all attachments is 25MB.

Please note: If you are a citizen/permanent resident of the United Kingdom and have not lived outside of the UK for at least three years, you may not be eligible to apply via The College, Swansea University. Admissions staff will review your application and get in touch to advise you.

Entry Requirements

There are both English Language and Academic Entry Requirements for Foundation and First Year study.

You can be admitted directly to First Year if your academic qualifications do not require a Foundation stage of study. For details of the requirements for students of your country, please visit our Academic Entry Requirements page.

In addition to the above, all students will be required to demonstrate a suitable lavel of English language ability. Information on these requirements, and on the qualifications that we accept, can be viewed on our English language requirements page.

Interactive Learning Skills and Communication

This module has been designed to help students develop their academic literacy and communication skills in preparation for undergraduate study and to understand the institutional culture, practices, rules and expectations of British higher education in an international academic context and community.

Providing students with knowledge of the fundamental aspects of business and business management, this module offers extensive considerations in terms of business planning, product marketing, managing people and the legal side of business. This module also focuses on change management, essential in an age of continual technological advances.

Critical Thinking

The module provides students with a fundamental knowledge base and intellectual skills associated with thinking critically. Also covered is understanding the basic requirements for building and consolidating a reasoned argument, issues of neutrality and bias and an emphasis is placed on the issue of the credibility of ideas, texts and evidence.

IT Support

Comprehensive understanding of current ICT issues is essential in the modern world. Through this module students will gain the skills to equip them in the use of common productivity and content management software programmes. This module will emphasise the use of Microsoft Windows packages including PowerPoint, Excel and Word as a platform for further study.

Economics

This module provides students with an understanding of the fundamental theories and concepts of micro and macro-economics by combining theory with application to real world examples, events and situations in areas such as market competition, price determination, business costs and decision making, how the economy works and the effects of government policies on the economy.

Statistics

Here an introduction to statistical concepts within the context of business, industry and government is provided to students. Numerous data sources are employed including business, sport, medicine, physical science, engineering sciences, biological science and social science. This module provides an opportunity for meaningful interpretation of statistical information and results through a variety of statistical measures

Composition and Style*

Aiming to assist students in improving their academic performance in terms of writing and presenting, Composition and Style dedicates time to allowing students to understand the importance of feedback and reflection in order to improve future performance. The module therefore provides students with the fundamental knowledge base and skills required at undergraduate level.

Applied Critical Thinking*

This module builds on the skills developed in the Critical Thinking by continuing to provide students with fundamental knowledge base and intellectual skills associated with thinking critically. This module differs from its sister module in the increased emphasis of the use of critical thinking in the real world.

Addressing fundamental aspects of Globalisation and the realities of today’s world, this module considers the economic, political, technological and social forces currently impacting on globalisation, providing an insight into the implications of continued globalisation on Multi-National Corporations and global trade.

The aim of English Skills Portfolio is to enable students to develop their English Language level within an academic context, and to equip students with the linguistic and academic skills necessary to perform confidently within their chosen discipline, whilst simultaneously encouraging them to become effective independent learners.

Research and Study Skills (ILSC)

This module aims to help students to develop their academic English, communication, research, and critical reasoning skills to be successful undergraduate students. A subsidiary aim of this module is to ensure that students develop transferable skills that help them to take responsibility for their personal, academic and professional development.

The module introduces students to the mathematical concepts necessary for further study in accounting and finance including but not limited to algebra, the basic functions of economics and business, calculus, problem solving, and the use and interpretation of graphs.

Foundation of Financial Accounting

Aiming to provide an understanding of the principles, and mechanics involved in the preparation of external financial statements, such areas as financial reporting, balancing accounts, trading and financial statements are all covered in an attempt to build an extensive and broad knowledge base.

Marketing and Strategy

Here an introduction to the concept and practice of marketing and strategy through a series of lectures followed by seminars in small groups is provided. The module aims to prepare students for a range of marketing and strategy modules in future years or study.

This module provides a rigorous understanding of basic micro-and macro-economic principles by combining theory and application to contemporary issues, such that students have a sound basis for progression to understand the context for business/finance actions in the wider economy.

Our Finance module provides students with an understanding of structure and functions of financial systems, and introduces them to quantitative techniques used in investment and financial decision making at a basic level in preparation for further development of these subjects later in the degree.

Statistics 1 for Accounting and Finance

Providing students with an overview of the statistical methods necessary for accounting/finance analysis, focusing specifically on the use of computer packages to conduct statistical analysis, this course is delivered through a series of lectures and computer lab sessions.

HRM operation and terminology, linkage with integrated operations and theoretical frameworks of business practice are but a few of the topics covered by this module. It is designed to introduce students to contemporary issues encountered by human resource and operations managers.

Foundations of Management Accounting

The aim of this program is to introduce students to the fundamentals of management accounting. Both Financial and Management Accounting are of critical importance in the support of all business activities so this course is designed to introduce the basic concepts on which management accounting is based, providing students with a toolkit that enables a better understanding of the performance of businesses and the decisions and problems they face.

Location

All Foundation Year programmes will be taught on the Bay Campus.  First and further years are also taught on the Bay Campus of Swansea University. 

Additional Costs

Recommended textbooks for this course are available in the University libraries, but you may choose to purchase personal copies.  All software needed for the course is available on the University network for use within University computer rooms.  Free wireless internet access is available across the whole of the University campus, including halls of residence.  Personal costs such as purchase of stationery, photocopying costs, parking fees or travel between the campuses are not included in your tuition fees.
