This is an introductory module to the structure and function of the human body and how it is affected by disease, delivered with a focus on healthcare science.
SHCM00
Clinical Assessment for Healthcare Scientists
This module will give practitioners the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding which underpins the use of clinical assessment in the context of differential diagnosis. Practitioners will be expected to apply knowledge and basic skills of clinical assessment to their individual scope of practice within a cardiology, respiratory physiology or sleep-disordered breathing clinic. The opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the role of other diagnostic modalities such as radiology and pathology are integral to the module.
SHHM03
Therapeutics and clinical dilemmas in practice
This module will examine the interactions of frequently prescribed drugs and their effect upon common pathologies. The module is aimed at enabling practitioners with a clinical diagnostic role to better identify iatrogenic effects of the drugs patients are prescribed, ensuring safer more objective practice. The module will be presented by a mixture of lectures and case based discussions, illustrating common iatrogenic presentations with a systems approach.
SHHM11
Clinical Assessment and Diagnostic Skills 2
This module builds upon the skills of clinical consultation, assessment and reasoning acquired in the Clinical Assessment and Diagnostic Skills 1 module to enhance and extend the student¿s diagnostic and management abilities. The student will learn to adapt the consultation to include any scenario, preparing for advanced practice in clinical settings. Emphasis will be upon reasoned differential diagnoses and the bio-clinical reasoning underlying the management of a holistic consultation.
SHHM59S
Clinical Diagnosis and Patient Management for Advanced Practice
This module builds upon the skills of clinical consultation, assessment and reasoning acquired in the SHHM49 Clinical Assessment Skills module. During this module students will be introduced to the diagnostic consultation as well as clinical decision making skills. The module adopts a case based approach; students will be introduced to a weekly clinical case that is critically reviewed from the diagnostic assessment all the way through to the therapeutic management. The student will learn to adapt the consultation to include any scenario, preparing for advanced practice in their clinical settings. Emphasis will be upon reasoned differential diagnoses and the bio-clinical reasoning underlying the management of a holistic consultation.
SHP354
Systems Physiology and Common Pathologies
This module builds on the students¿ knowledge and understanding of human physiological processes which are fundamental to health and wellbeing. Students should extend their comprehension of systems failure and the adverse effect this has on maintenance of health. Students should have a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
