• SHC137 Study Skills, Health Informatics and Health Service Practice

  This module provides an introduction to student skills, learning skills, IT skills, communication skills and elements of Health Informatics that prepares the student for work in the clinical environment of the National Health Service as an Assistant/Associate audiology practitioner.

• SHC138 Introduction to Audiology Practice I

  This module will introduce students to basic audiological practice.

• SHC139 Introduction to Audiology Practice II

  This module will expand students understanding of basic audiological practice and supplementary material required, following on from module Introduction to Audiology Practice I.

• SHC142 Scientific Basis of Engineering

  This module will provide a foundation from which the student will build their knowledge, skills, experience and attitudes throughout their programme of study and transfer these skills to employment in healthcare science. The aim of the module is to enable the student to gain an understanding and working knowledge of essential electrical and electronic theory, as well as essential engineering mechanics, applied to Clinical Engineering. The aim of the work-based placements within the module is to provide the student with a broad appreciation of the range of work undertaken within healthcare science. Students will begin the process of the development of the skills and attitudes relevant to the HCSP, building on learning in the academic environment, including practical sessions, clinical skills sessions, reflection on development, etc. Additionally, it should help students learn in the context of practice and real-life experience and have a motivational element as they work towards a career in the NHS.

• SHC155 Neurosensory Science

  This module provides an introduction to aspects of basic science which are important for the neurosensory science student to learn.

• SHC229 Clinical Audiology - Theory and Practice I

  This module will provide the students with further knowledge of clinical audiological procedures. This module will introduce assessment and management of the vestibular system, cover the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system in more depth and also introduce further routine audiological assessment techniques.

• SHC233ME Healthcare Science Work Based Placement 1 (Medical Engineering)

  This module provides an opportunity to explore professional practice within a healthcare science discipline and to gain the professional skills and competences required for practice at level 5.

• SHC234 Audiological Science 1

  This module will explore various diagnostic and rehabilitative aspects of audiological practice.

• SHC235 Sensory Aids 1

  This module provides an introduction to the treatment options for the hearing impaired. There will be a focus on the prescription and verification of hearing aid provision.

• SHC236 Vestibular Assessment and Management

  This is an introductory module that will explore the anatomy and physiology of the balance system. There will be a focus on the assessments of vestibular function, common vestibular complaints and vestibular rehabilitation.

• SHC248 Fluid Mechanics, Biomechanics and Materials

  This module covers the essential engineering principles and practice applied to fluid mechanics, biomechanics and materials used in clinical engineering practice.

• SHC328 Rehabilitation Engineering in the Clinical Environment

  This module aims to provide students with an appreciation and understanding of medical and social models of rehabilitation. They will be familiar with the quality management systems used in the rehabilitation engineering environment, including audit to underpin safe and high-quality services. This module will focus on the needs of patients and how to assess and support patients to make decisions about the use of assistive technologies.

• SHC329 Science and Principles Supporting Rehabilitation Engineering

  This module will develop students¿ knowledge and understanding of the main disabling conditions affecting people. The module will consider the role of the rehabilitation engineer, rehabilitation services and a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) approach to providing high-quality, patient-centred and safe rehabilitation services. The principles and use of assistive will be explored and linked to materials, design of assistive technologies and workshop practice.

• SHC331 Healthcare Science Research Project

  This module will facilitate the planning, execution and dissemination of a research project with direct relevance to the clinical specialism. Students will be expected to plan, execute and disseminate a literature review, audit or service improvement project.

• SHC332A Healthcare Science Work Based Placement 2 (Audiology)

  The aim of the module is to broaden the student experience of clinical practice in their specialism. This experience will ensure that on graduation, the student can undertake the breadth of practice expected of a newly qualified healthcare science practitioner.

• SHC332ME Healthcare Science Work Based Placement 2 (Medical Engineering)

  The aim of the module is to broaden the student experience of clinical practice in their specialism. This experience will ensure that on graduation, the student can undertake the breadth of practice expected of a newly qualified healthcare scientist (medical engineer).

• SHC333 Audiological Science 2

  This module will further expand on the various diagnostic and rehabilitative aspects of audiological practice. There will be a focus on using about health promotion, health screening and health management models and its application in hearing healthcare.

• SHC334 Sensory Aids 2

  This module provides an introduction to the treatment options for the hearing impaired. There will be a focus on the prescription and verification of hearing aid provision.

• SHC348 Medical Engineering in the Clinical Environment

  This module will develop students¿ knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice associated with the use of specific medical devices and the associated risk of use in the clinical environment. Students will analyse potential risks to patients, visitors, and staff from the introduction of new equipment and misuse of medical devices, including unauthorised modifications and failure to follow correct procedures. They will also develop their knowledge of quality management systems and be expected to consider how medical devices are used within clinical care pathways, including patient perspectives.

• SHC349 Science and Principles supporting Medical Engineering

  This module will develop students¿ knowledge and understanding of the sources of physiological signals and their methods of measurement, together with the key features of systems used to measure and analyse them. They will also gain an appreciation of the physiological effects of electricity on the human body.

• SHCM01 Micro-suctioning for Ear Wax Removal

  The module covers all aspects of routine wax removal via microsuctioning. A focus will be made on safe practice and using the correct techniques to ensure patient comfort.

• SHGE21 Study Day (Healthcare Science)

  This is a themed, standalone study day which will lead to a certificate of attendance. There are no credit points attached to this module.
