A Year in Industry is an opportunity to spend a year in employment during your studies, and is available to all undergraduate students studying within the School of Management. It will provide you with invaluable experience in the real working world and will help you develop a range of skills which will make you an attractive candidate for jobs after graduating.

There are countless benefits of completing a year in industry; and we’re proud that we can offer placement opportunities as part of all our undergraduate courses.

Our Year in Industry degrees are four-year degree programmes, where your third year is spent working in industry.

The 12 month placement is a credit-bearing (worth 120 credits), assessed part of a 4-year degree programme. This means that your performance on the assessment and completion of the placement will have an impact on your final degree classification, just as a year of taught modules would.

NOTE: If you wish to go undertake a Year in Industry in your third year of studies, you must complete and pass the Employability Skills Module as well as pass your overall studies. Get in touch with our Employability Team for more information.

If you are interested in getting work experience but don't want to do a year long industry placement, check out our Employability page.

What are the benefits of doing a Year in Industry?

With many employers increasingly looking for candidates with experience as well as academic achievement, work placements are becoming more and more important for students and the various benefits of undertaking a work placement are significant.

  • The skills gained whilst on placement will enhance a student’s learning and can be applied to modules in the final year of studies.
  • A placement is proven to have a positive impact on a student’s final year academic performance as students are often more focused and better prepared for the graduate recruitment market.
