Course Overview

The MA in Ancient Narrative Literature is a dynamic and unique programme. Its deep exploration of ancient Greek and Latin narrative literature is informed by globally renowned research expertise.

You will concentrate on fictional and factual ancient narratives in a variety of literary forms, including, epic poetry and historiography, and the novel. You will also have the chance to begin or continue the study of Greek or Latin.

Key concepts of literary and cultural theory will enable you to investigate ancient texts from the full chronological and geographical scope of classical antiquity in creative new ways. You will have the opportunity to develop such skills as using narratological approaches, understanding generic conventions and how authors exploit them, and analysing allegorical dimensions.

The School of Culture and Communication is based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula.

Ancient Narrative Literature benefits from teaching by scholars associated with the KYKNOS research centre, which continually produces internationally recognised research.

Our Graduate Centre promotes individual and collaborative research activity of international standard, providing a supportive environment for postgraduate research and taught masters study.

It offers postgraduate training to enhance academic and professional development, and facilitates seminar programmes, workshops and international conferences.

Your Ancient Narrative Literature Experience

The full-time course structure is split across the year with three modules offered in each academic semester (a total of six modules in part one) and a dissertation over the summer (part two). If you study the course part time, one compulsory and two optional modules are usually taken in each of the first and second years, with a dissertation forming third year.

You will take the methodology module 'Narrative Genres and Theory', two modules of Greek or Latin, and choose from the range of other modules on offer.

Your study resources will include a main library which is particularly well stocked with original texts and relevant modern scholarship. Library collections include a wide range of general and specialist periodicals, and an increasing number of specialist digital resources.

You will have the opportunity to participate in the activities of KYKNOS, the Centre for Research on Ancient Narrative Literature: it organises an informal fortnightly reading group which is designed to encourage postgraduate students to become members of the research community; and it organises research seminars, workshops, and panels at conferences.

Entry Requirements

2.1 degree required in Ancient History, Classics, Classical Civilisation, English Literature, Modern Languages or a related background or equivalent.

For applicants whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) or equivalent English test.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Our courses consist of in-person, on-campus teaching, enabling full engagement with your lecturers and fellow students.

Practical skills sessions, seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and presentations. However, our approach also includes the use of some online learning to support and enhance traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and peers and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in our virtual learning environment (Canvas), such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

The full-time course is split across the year offering three modules in each academic semester (a total of six modules) and then a dissertation over the summer. The dissertation component is written on a specialist research topic of your choosing.

Part-time students take three modules in the first year, three in the second year and write the dissertation in the third year.

There are opportunities for Welsh speakers to study some elements of this postgraduate course through the medium of Welsh but there is not yet enough provision to reach 40 credits in each year. The Programme Director can outline to you what is available in Welsh.
