Recognising your role, contribution and achievements within the Welsh context

The Academi Hywel Teifi Award rewards students who contribute to the Welsh-medium cultural and academic life and activities at Swansea University. The award recognises the role, contribution and achievements of supporting, promoting and ensuring a greater status for the Welsh language in all aspects of university life.

This may involve working as a Student Ambassador or Subject Representative with an emphasis on promoting Welsh language provision during Open Days, Campus Tours, School Visits, Departmental Events or at Eisteddfodau, or representing and acting on an official University committee o’r with the Welsh Society.

The Accreditation will be awarded retrospectively at the end of the Academic Year depending on the tasks completed. The experiences gained can contribute to other University-allocated Awards, e.g. Student Ambassador Award, SEA Employability Award.

There are three different Academi Hywel Teifi awards: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Bronze and Silver awards are mainly presented to volunteers, while those worthy of a Gold award will be able to prove that they have shouldered more responsibility, made an outstanding effort or demonstrated excellence in the context of the specific areas.

Bronze Award

Students will need to undertake at least five of the activities below, including submitting a record in the form of a reflective report, to reach the Bronze standard

  • Undertake and complete an appropriate induction process/Welsh medium training
  • Complete the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Welsh Language Skills Certificate
  • Conduct tours of the campus for prospective Welsh speaking students and/or their parents
  • Work conscientiously at an open day 
  • Promote Swansea University/Academi Hywel Teifi to prospective students, parents and teachers, in a professional manner.
  • Following an official induction process, answer phone calls through the medium of Welsh during clearing (six hours)
  • Act as a subject representative at Study Programme level, e.g. departmental staff/student meetings, or as facilitator on behalf of staff members
  • Raise the profile of your field, promote provision or a field of study through the medium of Welsh (e.g. successfully initiating discussion in a field of study through intelligent, balanced and worthwhile contributions on social platforms (e.g. Twitter, Facebook)
  • Submit a record in the form of a reflective report (500 words)

Silver Award

Building on recognised work undertaken to achieve the Bronze standard, students will also need to undertake at least four of the activities below, including submitting a record in the form of a reflective report 

  • Complete the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Welsh Language Skills Certificate
  • Act as an ambassador on a Return to School scheme
  • Work conscientiously at two open days 
  • Volunteer on the Students Union Buddy Scheme 
  • Assist another College/department in the University e.g. Admissions, during clearing 
  • Represent an area of study at College level, e.g. contribute as a member of the Students' Forum of the Swansea branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (attend three meetings)
  • Assist the University/Academi Hywel Teifi with social media activity and public engagement
  • Assist at two corporate events organised by the Academi or the University (e.g. Eisteddfod or the National Eisteddfod)
  • Assist the Welsh Society (GymGym) to organise at least two Welsh medium events in an academic year
  • Submit a record in the form of a reflective report (500 words)

Gold Award

Building on the work recognised to achieve the Bronze and Silver standards, students will need to undertake at least four of the activities below in addition, including submitting a record in the form of a reflective report

  • Manage, mentor and train a team of Welsh-medium Student Ambassadors
  • Be an effective link between the volunteers, the Academi and the Student Recruitment Office as necessary.
  • Represent an area of study at an institutional level, e.g. as a representative on the network panel or the Academic Board of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol
  • Be an ambassador for the Swansea branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol
  • Publish a substantial or successful piece (or pieces) of work on a specific subject
  • Represent and work on behalf of fellow students on one of the University's official committees which deals with the Welsh language
  • Win acclaim or recognition at a national level for the Academi and the University in any cultural or academic area
  • Perform a specific function on the GymGym committee or a specific function related to the Welsh language in the Students’ Union
  • Organise at least two Welsh-medium events together with the Officer of the Swansea Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol
  • Play a prominent and responsible leading role in the context of organising and training for Welsh-medium events, e.g. the Inter-college Eisteddfod or the Urdd Eisteddfod
  • Manage a team of fellow students as part of a Welsh- medium event, e.g. the Inter-college Eisteddfod or the Urdd Eisteddfod
  • Complete work on a Welsh speaking scheme
  • Submit a record in the form of a reflective report (500 words)

Further Details

In order to be considered for awards in these categories, students will be required to submit a reflective, analytical, report of their achievements.  Students will also be required to collate and provide documentary evidence (signed by a specific officer or member of staff where appropriate) in support of their applications. The documentary evidence can consist of any of the following or a combination of them:  

  • minutes of meetings
  • reports
  • testimonials
  • official agreements
  • receipts
  • photographs
